  10.        This document briefly describes the GNU optional product.
  11.        This product is provided "as-is" with no support, and is
  12.        obsolete.  You are encouraged to remove it and use the IRIX
  13.        Freeware distribution instead.  The freeware distribution is
  14.        available from _h_t_t_p://_f_r_e_e_w_a_r_e._s_g_i._c_o_m/, and is a superset
  15.        of this product.

  19.        2.  _W_h_a_t__i_s__G_N_U__a_n_d__w_h_y__d_o__I__n_e_e_d__i_t_?

  22.        GNU is a large collection of UNIX free software utilities
  23.        that are highly portable and have a wide installed base.
  24.        These include standard UNIX utilities (like `find', `diff',
  25.        etc.), text editors like `emacs', shells like `bash' and
  26.        many more.  In many cases, the GNU versions of standard UNIX
  27.        utilities are faster, more stable, and have better support
  28.        then their commercial versions counterparts (regardless of
  29.        vendor).

  33.        3.  _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n

  35.        GNU subsystems are all optional. None of them are installed
  36.        by default.  All the GNU subsystems install under /_u_s_r/_g_n_u_1.
  37.        _Y_o_u _m_i_g_h_t _a_d_d /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_b_i_n to your $PATH for convenience in
  38.        invoking these packages. This is not done by default.

  41.        All the GNU tools are provided with full source and
  42.        distributed under the GNU Public License (GPL).  Optional
  43.        full source can be installed under /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_s_r_c/.  Source
  44.        subsystems are called gnu.src.*

  50.        All content has been removed from version 1.1 of the GNU
  51.        product, and instead symlinks are created that reference the
  52.        corresponding freeware product.  In most cases the freeware
  53.        products is newer, and while it should be substantially the
  54.        same as its GNU 1.0 counterpart there are occasionally small
  55.        differences in command line options or behaviour.

  74.        Users upgrading from GNU 1.0 may get installation conflicts
  75.        if they have not installed the freeware versions of these
  76.        subsys.  If this occurs you can either download and install
  77.        the freeware packages from _h_t_t_p://_f_r_e_e_w_a_r_e._s_g_i._c_o_m/ or
  78.        choose not to upgrade to GNU 1.1.

  81.        The GNU and IRIX versions of certain commands are slightly
  82.        incompatible.  This is caused by the fact that both GNU and
  83.        IRIX sometimes support non-standard extensions that conflict
  84.        with each other.  If you encounter problems with this you
  85.        may workaround them by reordering your $PATH.

  88.        It is recommended that you read the file /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_R_E_A_D_M_E._S_G_I
  89.        after installation for a partial list of known
  90.        incompatibilities.

  97.        deprecated.  SGI recommends that you remove this product.
