- 1. _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n
-
- This document briefly describes the GNU optional product.
- This product is provided "as-is" with no support, and is
- obsolete. You are encouraged to remove it and use the IRIX
- Freeware distribution instead. The freeware distribution is
- available from _h_t_t_p://_f_r_e_e_w_a_r_e._s_g_i._c_o_m/, and is a superset
- of this product.

- GNU is a large collection of UNIX free software utilities
- that are highly portable and have a wide installed base.
- These include standard UNIX utilities (like `find', `diff',
- etc.), text editors like `emacs', shells like `bash' and
- many more. In many cases, the GNU versions of standard UNIX
- utilities are faster, more stable, and have better support
- then their commercial versions counterparts (regardless of
- vendor).

- GNU subsystems are all optional. None of them are installed
- by default. All the GNU subsystems install under /_u_s_r/_g_n_u_1.
- _Y_o_u _m_i_g_h_t _a_d_d /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_b_i_n to your $PATH for convenience in
- invoking these packages. This is not done by default.
-
-
- All the GNU tools are provided with full source and
- distributed under the GNU Public License (GPL). Optional
- full source can be installed under /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_s_r_c/. Source
- subsystems are called gnu.src.*

- All content has been removed from version 1.1 of the GNU
- product, and instead symlinks are created that reference the
- corresponding freeware product. In most cases the freeware
- products is newer, and while it should be substantially the
- same as its GNU 1.0 counterpart there are occasionally small
- differences in command line options or behaviour.

- Users upgrading from GNU 1.0 may get installation conflicts
- if they have not installed the freeware versions of these
- subsys. If this occurs you can either download and install
- the freeware packages from _h_t_t_p://_f_r_e_e_w_a_r_e._s_g_i._c_o_m/ or
- choose not to upgrade to GNU 1.1.
-
-
- The GNU and IRIX versions of certain commands are slightly
- incompatible. This is caused by the fact that both GNU and
- IRIX sometimes support non-standard extensions that conflict
- with each other. If you encounter problems with this you
- may workaround them by reordering your $PATH.
-
-
- It is recommended that you read the file /_u_s_r/_g_n_u/_R_E_A_D_M_E._S_G_I
- after installation for a partial list of known
- incompatibilities.

-
- The GNU product is unsupported by SGI, and is in fact
- deprecated. SGI recommends that you remove this product.
